School Emergency Handbook

I. Framework

Emergency preparedness must be undertaken in light of the school’s particular mission and context. School leaders are encouraged to develop and review emergency preparedness and response plans rooted in their duty of care towards each member of their community. Emergencies arise without warning and no community is exempt from potential threats, disasters or critical situations.

This website is designed to support school communities in:

  • Preparing adequately for emergencies,
  • Putting specific plans in place to minimize the impact of emergencies,
  • Responding effectively to emergencies, and
  • Recovering in a healthy and timely manner after an emergency.

II. Outline

The website content includes three major sections: PREPARATION, RESPONSE and RECOVERY.

PREPARATION and RESPONSE sections are primarily organized using the following categories:

  • Critical Incident Response
  • Threat Assessment
  • Emergency Management
  • Child/Youth Protection

The RECOVERY section provides a starting point for schools in recovering from an emergency or critical incident that has the potential for longer term and widespread impact on the school community.
